Rotary Club urging charity cyclists to pedal to a medal

September 14, 2021

There is still time to sign up to take part in Howden Rotary Club’s Sponsored Cycle Ride.

The club’s 23rd annual sponsored cycle will take place on Sunday, September 19 with riders setting off from Laxton Village Hall. Howden Rotary Club President, Maureen Bilsbrough said: “Given the recent rise in the popularity of cycling and the Government’s initiatives to encourage a more healthy lifestyle this Rotary Club event offers the opportunity to combine this with raising money for one’s favourite charity/good cause. Participants of all ages and abilities are welcomed to take part in the event and can choose to complete 5, 7, 13 or 20 miles. Cyclists can choose any cause of their choice to raise money for and the club will donate a further £10 to the chosen charity of every cyclist that raises in excess of £40 - in other words you raise £40 and the club will make it £50. All riders under the age of 14 who complete the course and all participants who raise at least £100 for their nominated charity will also receive a medal for their achievement.

Rotarian, Richard Longthorp said: “The whole ethos is that Rotary organises the route, registrations, marshals, refreshments, maps etc and the riders organise sponsorship for the charity of their choice. Just for clarity, all the money the riders raise goes to their charity, not Rotary. “Last year riders raised over £6,000 for over 20 different good causes, causes who I am sure would have been extremely grateful for the support in such difficult times when fund raising activities were severely compromised. He added: “For those who may have benefited from Rotary funds in the past this is a great way of adding to those funds donated and for others it is a great way to kick off a project or add to what you have already raised.” The club says the health and safety of the cyclists is the utmost priority and therefore the organisers will ensure that the event complies with all the current Government Covid-19 guidelines and legislation when it takes place which will therefore require the riders to pre-register. A flyer, map of the routes, a registration form and any further information can be obtained from Richard by contacting him on 01430 433030 or email rlongthorp@longthorp.com
